The 10 Brutal Truths About Living In Chicago (The Good, The Bad, And The Freezing)
It is cleaner than New York, cheaper than LA, and the food beats both of them—but living here requires a specific kind of toughness to survive the winter.

If you ask a Chicagoan what it’s like to live here, you’ll get two answers.
In July, we will tell you it is the greatest city on earth.
In February, we will tell you to save yourself and move to Florida.
The truth is, Chicago is the best city in America—if you are tough enough to handle it.
It is cleaner than New York, cheaper than LA, and the food beats both of them. But it comes with a price tag (and we don't just mean taxes).
Based on 35+ years of living here, here is the honest, unfiltered list of Pros and Cons that potential movers need to know.
## 1. The Rent Math Actually Makes Sense (Pro)
This is the biggest reason people move here. You can actually live like an adult in Chicago. In NYC or San Francisco, a $100k salary gets you a shoe box with a roommate. In Chicago, that same money gets you a one-bedroom apartment with a dishwasher, in-unit laundry, and maybe even a lake view. We have world-class amenities without the "I’m drowning in debt" anxiety.
## 2. February Will Try To Break You (Con)
Let’s not sugarcoat it. The winters are offensive. The wind doesn't just blow; it hurts. From January through March, the sky turns a permanent shade of gray, and your seasonal depression will kick in hard. If you can’t handle wearing a puffer coat for 5 months straight, you won't survive here. But the trade-off? The summers are euphoric because we *earned* them.
## 3. We Are The "Alley" Capital of the World (Pro)
This sounds weird to outsiders, but locals know. Chicago has a massive system of alleys. That means our trash goes in the back, not on the sidewalk. Unlike New York, where you have to walk over mountains of garbage bags on the curb, Chicago streets are surprisingly clean. It makes a huge difference in daily quality of life.
## 4. The Traffic Will Age You (Con)
We have great public transit, which is good, because driving here is a nightmare. The Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) is essentially a parking lot. We consistently rank in the top 3 worst traffic cities in the US. If you move here, do yourself a favor: live near the L line that takes you to work, or be prepared to lose hours of your life staring at taillights.
## 5. The Food Scene Is Undefeated (Pro)
It’s not just deep dish. In fact, most locals rarely eat deep dish unless we have visitors. The real magic is the tavern-style pizza, the Italian Beefs (dipped, with hot peppers), the jibaritos, and the Michelin-star dining that costs half of what it does in Paris. You will gain 15 pounds your first year here. It’s worth it.
## 6. Nature Is... Complicated (Con)
If you are a mountain climber or a hardcore hiker, you are going to be bored. The landscape here is aggressively flat. We don't have hills; we have overpasses. While the Lakefront Trail is incredible, and the Forest Preserves are nice, you have to drive hours to find anything that resembles "rugged terrain."
## 7. O'Hare Is A Superpower (Pro)
Love it or hate it, O'Hare means you can get *anywhere*. Having two major international airports (Midway and O'Hare) is a luxury. Direct flights to Tokyo, London, or pretty much anywhere in the US make Chicago a dream base for travelers.
## 8. The Crime Narrative vs. Reality (Mixed)
The national news paints Chicago as a war zone. The reality is "hyper-localized." Most of the violent crime happens in specific neighborhoods on the South and West sides. If you are in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, or the Loop, your biggest safety concern is usually "Apple Picking" (phone theft) or car jackings, not random violence. You have to be street smart, yes. But millions of us live here safely every day.
## 9. "Midwestern Nice" Is Real (Pro)
People here will actually hold the door for you. They will help you carry a stroller up the subway stairs. Unlike the East Coast, where everyone seems angry, or the West Coast, where people are "nice but not kind," Chicagoans are generally down-to-earth, unpretentious, and friendly.
## 10. The Architecture Will Ruin You For Other Cities (Pro)
You will become an architecture snob. Between the historic bungalows, the greystones, and the downtown skyscrapers, Chicago is objectively the best-looking city in the country. Taking the Architecture River Tour isn't a tourist trap; it’s practically a religious experience for locals.
